Farmers Market: a Los Angeles tradition for more than 70 years

Published: Oct 31, 2009

In 1934 a group of farmers began an informal market in the empty lot at the corner of Third and Fairfax in Los Angeles. They displayed their produce on the tailgates of their vehicles, to their delight; customers quickly arrived to purchase fruit, vegetables and flowers. The casual, open air commerce was enticing to many patrons. The Farmers Market became a hit and only continued to grow from there.

With time and much growth, the Farmers Market is still one of the most popular sights in Los Angeles, an official Los Angeles Cultural and Historical Landmark drawing over 3 million visitors a year. There are dozens of small shops and stalls offer a simplistic charm that entices many patrons. There are butchers and bakers and others selling fresh produce, candies, nuts and cheese.

Magee's, one of the Farmers Market's original merchants, grinds 100,000 pounds of peanut butter a year. At Bob's Donuts they bake and sell over 1,000 donuts each day. Today, there are more than 100 shops at the Market including shops for jewelry, clothing, fragrances, home furnishings, books, collectables and so much more. More than 90% of the shops and stalls are locally owned and employ more than 700 workers.

In 2002, the Grove at the Farmers Market opened, adding more than 80,000 square-feet of retail and restaurants to the existing complex. There is a green streetcar and a simulated main street that runs the gambit of both complexes and adds more attractions at the corner of Third and Fairfax.

The Farmers Market is a great destination for anyone. Patrons can be seen making a family day of it, enjoying ice cream and shopping. Then, as the sun goes down many young couples and singles can be found shopping, dining and enjoying the fantastic California weather.
