    Artist Self-Portrait - Stacy decided to paint a self-portrait in the style of Henri Matisse. This painting—Stacy’s version of “The Green Stripe” by Matisse—was done by holding a mirror in one hand and a paintbrush in the other.

    Sushi Roll - Sushi is one of Stacy’s favorite foods to eat, and she decided to capture the likeness of her favorite food in a painting. She even used real ginger as opposed to painting it. Stacy chose a bright blue as the background to make the sushi “pop”, triggering a hunger for the delicious treat. Real chopsticks are also part of the painting since this is traditional how we eat sushi.

Stacy remember’s hearing the old cliché “Money Doesn’t Grow On Trees” and she has turned her negative thoughts and energy into positive thoughts and energy.     Mischevious Kitty - If Stacy could be anything for a day, she’d be a cat. That way, she could do whatever she pleased without getting in trouble or having to clean up the mess. Hiding behind the window pane, “Mischievous Kitty” tries to look innocent and convince us that he didn’t cause the accident.

    Welcome to Hollywood - Working from three photos, Artist Stacy Schilling created a beautiful painting capturing the essence of Los Angeles’ icons: a magnificent beach sunset complete with a glowing moon and a dazzling array of twinkling stars, the Hollywood sign, and the top half of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Each of the three landmarks reminds Stacy why she loves L.A.

    Red Tomato, Red Cup - Continuing her penchant for still lifes, Stacy chose a tomato and cup to create an earth-toned painting. Stacy developed the base with acrylic paint in burnt sienna. Then she used oils to complete the painting.

    Pixie Chick - This painting is based on the illustration poster “Pixie Chick.” In addition to the abstract, striped background, “Pixie Chick” is purposely painted without a neck and body to capture the Sixties vibe. Stacy also used fake eyelashes and real earrings to complete the look.

    Jack - Commemorating one of her favorite childhood holidays, Stacy painted a jack-o’-lantern. Other than the candlelight, Stacy painted “Jack” in complete darkness by using acrylic paint in burnt sienna. After the painting was developed, she finished it using oils.

    Mmm...I Eat M&M's - When a friend gave Stacy a bag of Peanut M&M’s, she decided not to eat them but to paint them instead. She dropped the M&M’s onto a plate and painted them where they landed. She included a set of chopsticks to suggest an alternate way of eating M&M’s.

    Burst of Color - Sunflowers are Stacy’s favorite flowers. Contrasting the brightly colored flowers against a dark background, this painting brings out the brilliant hues of the sunflowers.

    Bubble Gum, Master Copy - “Bubble Gum” is a master copy from Wayne Thiebaud’s “Blue Vendor.” Working from a small 3x4 inch print of the original, Stacy captured the rich panoply of colors in a bubble gum dispenser. The immaculate colors and accents in the painting demonstrate the meticulous effort invested to emulate the original.

    America the Beautiful - This painting is named “America the Beautiful” because it depicts all the advantages Americans enjoy while others around the world have much less. When the painting was finished, Stacy purposely walked over it with dirty shoes to show that we often fail to appreciate all the opportunities we have in the world’s richest country.

    Stop Looking at Me! - When the neighbor’s cat, Jagger, wouldn’t leave my front doopstep, I grabbed my camera and decided to take his photo. After several tries, I finally got a great shot of him looking directly at me. His express clearly reads “Stop Looking at Me!”.

Artist Bio

“When I get frustrated with how a drawing or painting is being created, I will "flip" it upside down so I can finish it. I find that working on a drawing or painting upside down helps me see the piece from a new perspective and allows me to refine the piece until I feel like it’s complete,” said artist Stacy Schilling. “I learned how to draw upside down from my seventh grade art teacher, Mrs. Schwartz. Learning to draw upside down helped train the right side of my brain and I feel like a better artist when I work upside down." Stacy began her art career as a young girl with coloring books, arts and crafts, latch hook, needlepoint and cross-stitch. Stacy’s passion for art got an enormous boost from her seventh grade art teacher, Mrs. Schwartz. Her creative expression and fulfillment flourished with a year-long place mat project and painting. Her development as an artist continued as she wrote and designed her own book and magazine, took drawing classes, advanced as a painter by learning to look at color and shape instead of the entire object, immersed herself in photography and mastered the printmaking process. Stacy's passion for art emanates from every piece she creates, whether it’s a drawing, painting, logo, brochure, Web site or keepsake gift. Stacy earned a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from Northern Kentucky University and made the Dean's List. She also received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Kentucky.
