Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group was born in August 1992, in a small industrial garage near the corner of Parthenia and Bryant, in the city of Northridge, deep in the northwest San Fernando Valley. Located in the NoHo Arts District of North Hollywood, California, Zombie Joe founded the company upon the ground-breaking theatrical doctrines of Antonin Artaud, Bertolt Brecht, Anton Chekhov, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and George Lucas. Building upon the traditions of these innovators Zombie Joe would be joined by his dear friend Josh T. Ryan, co-founder of ZJU, developing their OWN peculiar evolution of performance, forging their OWN brand of “Progressive” Theatre as a unique brand of live entertainment paving ZJU’s path into the new millennium. Today, Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group, in combination with their offspring, The Limecat Family Theatre Company, lead by the artistic director Zombie Joe and co-artistic directors, Josh T. Ryan & Denise Devin, produce up to 17 original, high quality productions a year, leading the community in both experimental progressive theatre and wholesome, high-energy children’s theatre.Joined by the talent and artistry of innovators such as Jeri Batzdorff (costumes), Alison Cardoso (voice, acting, writing, directing), William Norrett (writing, directing, acting), Randy Long (e-marketing, sound), Christopher Reiner (music, poetry, writing) Jana Wimer (costumes, scenic design, acting), and a whole crew of underground contributors too long to list, ZJU continues to stay alive with fierce dedication and creative energy from all our loving artists and audiences. At ZJU, The Underground entrusts that theatre is for everyone, young and old, for theatre lovers from all walks of life, and from all income brackets. Amidst the ever-rising cost of living, ZJU has made a pledge to the theatre community to keep admission prices as low as humanly possible. Admission has yet to rise above the $15 mark. Zombie Joe’s Underground operates as a tide against inflation, for we neither respect nor adhere to the dogma of personal greed and profit, as our precious product is monetarily immeasurable. We believe solely in the creative passion of the mind, body, and spirit, and we are true proponents of the living arts. Zombie Joe’s Underground anticipates the future continuing the same purpose and intent used in the past. Our vision now includes nurturing a variety of artists such as composers, filmmakers, musicians, scenic painters, set designers, and finely crafted performers. The vast majority of our productions are created by our very own Underground, from the art hanging in our lobby, to the backdrop on the walls, to the words spoken on stage, the sound effects that set the mood, and the songs the actors sing. It is with great pride and overflowing joy that we claim our humble gratitude and enthusiasm for these simple opportunities to express ourselves. Looking ahead, ZJU shall continue to unite its Underground members and audiences, in our most ambitious projects yet to come. Gratefully Yours, Zombie Joe & The Underground
