Warner Avenue Elementary School Reviews

Warner has been fantastic so far. My child is just completing kindergarten and I've been told that the kindergartners test as high as some 2nd graders. It's extremely academic and could be a problem if your child can't keep up. There is a ton of parental involvement, which is fantastic, but be prepared... it's a lot! The only other complaint is fundraising. It never ends. Count on contributing year round, on an almost daily basis. It would be better if they'd just tell you how much it is going to cost at the beginning of the year and leaving people alone for a couple of weeks at a time. This is kind of like a public/private school. I suppose you don't have to pay, but the pressure is definitely there to contribute and that is partly why the school is so good.

Warner Avenue is the jewel in the crown of LAUSD Elementary Schools. With generally excellent teachers and an administration that is able to prevent LAUSD from harming the school, it is the best public school gets. Academically it is more rigorous than most private schools, yet offers a more socially stimulating environment with more than 600 kids. The active parent population provides ample support in terms of time and money which allows all children to benefit from many programs the city will not pay for. If you are lucky enough to live in the district, you should come to this school - all of my kids have had the best experience!

Excellent School...wonderful leadership...and a beautiful and safe campus to call home for your kids...be prepared to pay by donating time, talents and mostly treasures.

A mixed bag. Warner is well equipped and supported by the parents and city. The star program is fantastic. The faculty are obsessed with test scores and pay little attention to the emotional and social needs of the students. Our child is gifted, so he has no problems on that score, but he is bored by the repetitive cramming for tests and inundated with busy work.

This is my child's second year at Warner, and in general we love it. The teachers we've had have all been superb, fair, and experienced. Our main gripe: As some have alluded to here, it is very true that the unusual affluence of the typical Warner family creates an unmistakable element of wealth-based social politicking that can be extremely unpleasant for those children whose families are not in a high income strata. Many parents openly convey an arrogant sense of entitlement to the teachers and administration, and seem all too quick to use their children to expand their own professional networks rather than encourage their children to find friends based on more substantial values. However, that is not the fault of the school's administration or teachers, who I've found deal with all students and families in an even-handed manner.

This is an excellent school with awesome teachers and wonderful S.T.A.R. teachers! This is the best school my child has been in!

This school is all about test scores and pleasing/catering to the rich and famous parents whose children attend. The academics are as stringent as any private school and individualism is discouraged. The teachers are harsh and inflexible. The administration is overworked and often rude. They constantly hit parents up for donations to both the school and to the teachers Unless your child is a rich automaton who is happy copying War and Peace in longhand, try one of the more 'diverse' local elementary schools. Note that in this neighborhood, diverse is anyone who makes less than 100K per year.

This is an excellent public school, with lots of enrichment programs, which give you the advantages many private schools have. Very active parent support group.

It is difficult for me to talk about Warner Avenue Elementary without getting angry. For all of its academic reputation, you couldn't find a school that is more cold, impersonal, snobbish. Ironically, the STAR program was a good program.

Good, experienced teachers. Recently redone play yard. Lots of parental involvement. Class size increases after 3rd grade.

Excellent teachers and curriculum enriched by parent support.

My child attends Warner Avenue Elementary School. It is a clean and beautiful school with great teachers and staff. The only down side to this school is the amount of homework given everyday. It seems excessive.

Warner Avenue is an excellent elementary school located in the heart of Westwood. It has tremendous parent support which helps to provide all of the extras such as art, music, science and phys ed. It's academics are superior and the school consistently is one of the top scoring elementary schools in the L.A. area.

My three children have been extremely happy at Warner Avenue and so have we with the level of education and motivation our children have received. The teachers are so enthusiastic and it shows. The after-school program is extensive and fun, and parents are really encouraged to get fully involved in all aspects of the school.

Fine school. Great STAR program.

Wonderful school, caring, devoted teachers, art, music programs, after school programs, love this school!

Students at Warner Avenue get good test scores and the curriculum is academically challenging. There is great parent involvement. The school is safe and there is good discipline. There is very poor responsiveness by teachers to children with individual needs. I would never send a child with ESL or ADHD there.

Very involved parents, good teachers. Only problem is class size. Students don't get a chance to really go deeply into interesting material, and really develop a lifelong love of science, for example.

Tremendous parent involvement. Great administrative staff and teachers.

Great school with rigorous academic program. All the benefits of a great private school without the fees!!!

Excellent teachers and programs

This school receives tremendous parent involvement both in volunteer hours and funds received. Therefore, all the classroom supplies and playground equipment are always in top condition. The parents are actively involved in numerous aspects of the school which is greatly beneficial to both the school and the students. The classrooms are a bit crowded, but the teacher's are excellent at devoting individual time to students. They know how to bring out the best in their students, and are wonderful at motivating and inspiring.

Pluses: Amazing parent involvement. Minuses: Very tradiditional and uninspired teaching. Limited emphasis on creativity. A great school if you value speed, test taking, and spelling. STAR(the afterschool program) however, is great.

Warner Elementary has a great academic school with their APIs in the top ratings-very uncommon for southern CA schools.

This school has made a significant impact in my life. Im a sucessfull realtor, and come from a background in Managing large hotel chains, and providing sales and marketing with national corporations. My success truly comes from the education that I received at Warner Ave school.I was one of the unfortunate child that was transported from other schools in LA that had reached their student capacity. And I feel lucky to have been one of the students that was sent here. All my sucess is a result of the root of confidence that was planted by the teachers of Warner Ave School. They were dedicated and always encouraged me to be who I am today. special thanks, to Mrs. Botansky, Mrs. Luchsinger,Mrs. Taniguchi.

A great public school that has had some difficulties with leadership for the last 3 years. Their academic standards are high and have remained competitive with the private schools. My oldest went on to Harvard-Westlake without any problem. They have a wonderful coach who enters the school in many city wide sports competitions. I guess my criticism lies with the changes in principals (3 in 4 years) and how willing they are to work around the massive restrictions of the larger LAUSD. And as in many schools, there are a couple teachers who should really retire. Still my family has had 12 good years at Warner.

Very good school with hands-on parent teacher envolvement.

This is an amazing school with diverse ways of teaching. I sent both of my kids there and I never regreted it.

I am a warner ave. alumni, Warner was an amazing school with great standards. The teachers were all amazing to me except for one year of warenr. Now I currently do not seem to fnd any problems with teachers that my sister has. I graduated Warner in 2002, and I wish Warner was a middle school. Warner has a great program, I was taught more there then I am in my new school ( which I will keep unidetified). There were also great sports teams, who in my years always seemed to make it into the finals even when I was on the team. The teacches and staff give great care for the kids. The only problem with the school is the principal. Once the original principal left the school went downward and still is today (2005). I hope this improves. Overall this is possibly the best school in LA .

I have heard that this school is the best public school in the LA area. Kids here go to the best private high schools in the area. The area is very ritzy and the demographic is like a private school.

Great teachers. But very traditional. Lots of homework. Not a creative approach. Nice mix of students in terms of race and income level.

Fine for most. If you need acceleration, this is not the best choice. Families are warm and involved.

Warner Avenue is an incredible school. The parent involvement is excellent, with an active PTA and a Booster Club. Fabulous sports--we have, I think, the best coach in the city. Booster Club funds an outside music teacher and a Great Works of Art program. The best thing sbout Warner, however, is the quality of teachers we have. They are fabulous and hard-working.

Warner has excellent academics and terrific teachers. For kids that fit 'within the box' this is a great school. For children who think and learn differently, this is not always the best place.

Highly over-rated! A good school but not a great one.

We loved Warner. Mr. Kaufman is a gem; his door is always open. The kids are nice and there is a zero tolerance for bullying. Our child was wonderfully prepared when he entered middle school. The parents raise a lot of money and the school, therefore, has many extras not found in other public schools. If you are lucky enough to live or work in the neighborhood send your child to Warner. The only negative I perceived was that some of the parents are very territorial and resent kids on permits.

Great school, staff and parent participation.

Warner is mostly overrated. The test scores are high but that probably has much less to do with the quality of education and much more to do with the high SES of the children who attend this school. There is quite a bit of a snobbery factor to the school although most people are usually pleasant. The new principal needs to do a better job of working with parents. The STAR program is fine but very expensive and seems to close a lot.

I was a student at Warner Ave. years ago, and am now a teacher at another elementary school in LA. When I was looking for a teaching position, I was looking for a school just like Warner. The was amazing then, and I know from children who live in my neighborhood, that it is still wonderful. I have only the most fond memories of Warner, and would highly recommend it as an incredible neighborhood school.
