J. H. McGaugh Elementary School Reviews

This school is above standars set for California schools. Thisschool raised a quarter of a million dollars between their PTA and project Seek. With the funds going to Promote Music, Art an amazing media center, field trips, teacher appreciation etc. McGaugh is also know for their dedication to special needs children.

My child has progressed immensely since her last school. We at first believed that we wouldn't fit in into another upscale public school but the parents at McGaugh are welcoming to people who are not in their social economic scale. Great school my child really fits in. The school offers so much to our family.

Mrs. Palmer makes this school! She will attend any function that the parents put together, or an event that involves any student or that could benefit any student. What a true gift. Mr. Geithman has brought great ideas and energy to the school and the teachers are amazing. This school is more of a community and embraces diversity and encourages sensitivity to all. I am blessed to have my children attend this school.

Phenomenal school. Top notch teachers. Can not find a better school. I have two kids attending now and a third soon, much better than the private schools in area. The reason the test scores are lower than other schools in disctrist are because of their strong program to handle special needs children.

McGaugh is a fantastic school. With large parent participation. Large fundraising campaign from PTA and Project Seek pay for so many programs at the school (art, music, events, media lab and so much more)

Very happy with school. Lots of parent involvement

My daughter has attended McGaugh for 5 years now and the access to a well rounded education never ceases to amaze me! The teachers are friendly, helpful and proactive in getting family members involved in their children's education. Access to art, music, science and sports programs are easily attainable and emphasis on fostering growth in many of these areas is stressed. My daughter, who is now completing the 4th grade, loves McGaugh, and continues to grow and learn in an environment which makes her feel at home. -R. Preall

This is an excellent elementary school with many programs available to the students. On-site day care is a wonderful option. The school grounds feature a pool, tennis courts, auditorium and gym. More than many middle schools have. If your child has the opportunity to attend this school, you will not be disappointed.

McGaugh is a wonderful school with a great PTA. Parents are very involved and there are many extracurricular activities to choose from.

Very good PTA, good environment.

We moved from San Francisco where we thought our son was in a good school. That is until we put him in McGaugh. He is in the second grade and learning at a 3rd and even 4th grade level. He is a smart kid, but it is primarily due to the school and teachers. He has music, art and P/E which he loves because 'the playground isn't just black top.' They have 'awards' each month which, I think, give all the kids a sense of accomplishment. Parents are extremely involved in the school and fund-raising. To me that would be the only draw back is that you are constantly being asked for money at this school. But, when you see the efforts and results it does seem worth it. It's an excellent school.

This school is very small with staff. Teacher's kind of do their own thing without complete regard to requirements.

My child has attended McGaugh Elementary for 3 years, and I have to say it's been a wonderful experience. The teachers are phenomenal; the music program is outstanding; the art class is great. They have a very well rounded curriculum that challenges the kids, but at the same it's also fun. The parents and community involvement is what makes this school so unique. There is such a high level of involvement and commitment by the parents to the kids and school that everyone knows McGaugh for this very thing. Everyone is so helpful and kind and willing to do anything to make a difference. The principal can be seen everywhere. She's always out and about helping with the kids on the playground or talking to the parents and kids; she's very accessible. McGaugh is an excellent school. We are very lucky to have such a school in the Public arena.

My child is graduating into first grade, so he has only had one year here. The classes are limited to about 20 children, and parental participation in highly encouraged. Parents can sign in at any time and monitor teachers or help in the class. There is time for art and music, as well as a media center for children to use books, magazines and computers. Teachers and the pricipals are very accessable. The academic standards are very high. By the end of kindergarten, my son had learned to read simple books, add in double digits, write paragraphs and participate in public speaking! Swim lessons are available at an on campus pool, and sports are ready available as well.

This is a very small school in regards to funding and services. They manage well with what they have, but lack the personnel knowledge to service children with special needs. The teachers are all very different in their teaching styles and approach to the CA state standards and while they are covered, teachers do what they want, therefore there is a lack of conformity at the various grade levels. There is a diverse population due to the neighboring military base and their addition of children and this provides a well rounded student body and acceptance. The city offers a wide variety of extra curricular activities for the students to participate in, as does the surrounding cities.

My child has been at McGaugh school for 3 years now.I really have seen a lot of progress since she first started. Just because she's in special ed. doesn't mean they treat those kids any different. The principal is great with getting to know all her kids. I'm very happy with JH McGaugh.

My original goal was to send my Daughter (Age 9, Grade 3) to private school, however after nearly three years at McGaugh I must say I am very pleased with the school's overall quality of education provided. I am a bit concerned over class size, but it seems my child has received individual attention and has now been asked to join the GATE Program (Gifted And Talented Education). Her teacher focuses on reading, creative writing and the sciences. I believe my daughter has grown as an individual and now has acquired many of the lif-skills necessary for her future. She has gained confidence, now plays the violin and has published several stories/poems in the 'New Thinker' magazine. Thank you McGaugh.
